## How asphalt tonnage is calculated

Asphalt estimating is a single weight-first chain, referenced to the compacted thickness you actually want on the ground: compacted volume = area × compacted thickness, and tonnage = compacted volume × compacted density. There is no separate loose-volume step.

The reason is that the mix densities used here are already compacted, in-place densities — the roller consolidation is baked into the number. Paving crews handle the loose-to-compacted difference by setting the screed height about 1.25× the target thickness, but that is a laydown practice, not estimating maths. You measure and order against the finished, compacted thickness.

Ordered tonnage = tonnage × (1 + waste). Hot-mix is rarely returnable once it leaves the plant, so a waste allowance of 5–10% covers spillage, joints, hand-work and slight over-thickness. Truckloads = total ordered tonnage ÷ truck payload, rounded up, because a part-filled last load still ties up a whole truck.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much asphalt do I need for my driveway?

Multiply the paved area by the compacted thickness to get volume, then by the asphalt's compacted density to get weight. A 40 m² (430 sq ft) driveway at 50 mm (2 in) of dense-graded HMA works out to about 4.6 tonnes (5.1 short tons) before waste. Add 8–10% waste and you would order roughly 5 tonnes. The calculator does all of this as you type — just enter the dimensions and pick a driveway application.

### How many tons of asphalt per square foot or square yard?

As a rule of thumb, dense-graded asphalt is about 110 lb per square yard for every inch of compacted thickness (roughly 58 kg per square metre per 25 mm). So 2 inches covers a square yard with about 220 lb, and 1,000 sq ft at 2 inches needs roughly 12 short tons. The coverage table above lists common thicknesses; the calculator uses your exact area and mix density rather than a rule of thumb.

### How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

A residential driveway is commonly 50 mm (2 in) of compacted surface course over a compacted aggregate base, with 75 mm (3 in) for driveways that see RVs or delivery trucks. Parking lots run 75 mm (3 in), private roads 100 mm (4 in) or more, and paths or overlays around 38 mm (1.5 in). The application preset seeds these, and you can edit the thickness for your own spec.

### How many truckloads of asphalt will I need?

Because asphalt is dense, trucks hit their weight limit long before they run out of space, so truckloads are counted by weight. The calculator divides your total ordered tonnage by the truck payload and rounds up. A tandem hauls about 16 short tons, a tri-axle about 22, and a UK 8-wheel tipper about 20 tonnes — all editable presets. Most single driveways fit in one load.

### What is the density of asphalt?

Compacted dense-graded hot-mix asphalt is about 2,320 kg/m³ (145 lb/ft³). Open-graded and porous mixes are lighter at around 2,000 kg/m³ because of their higher void content, while stone matrix asphalt (SMA) is similar to dense-graded at roughly 2,280 kg/m³. These are compacted, in-place densities — the value the tonnage calculation needs — and every one is editable in the calculator.

### Does this calculator work for hot-mix and cold-mix asphalt?

The presets are built around hot-mix asphalt (HMA), the material used for driveways, lots and roads. Cold-mix and recycled-millings surfaces have different, usually lower, compacted densities and are less predictable, so if you are using one, switch the mix to Custom and enter your supplier's density. The area × thickness × density maths is the same for any paving material.

### How much waste should I add to an asphalt order?

Between 5% and 10% is typical. Because hot-mix cannot be stored or returned once it is delivered, it is safer to round up than to run short mid-pour. The calculator seeds 10% for driveways, 8% for parking lots and roads, and 5% for overlays, but the waste field is editable for your own site conditions.
