## How much roofing material do I need?

Roofing is estimated by sloped area first, material second. Work out each face's footprint from its plan dimensions, multiply by the pitch factor to get the true sloped area, add them up, add a waste allowance, then divide by how much one bundle, panel or tile covers to get the count.

## Roof pitch explained: x:12, degrees and the multiplier

Roof pitch is the steepness of the slope, written as the rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run — a 6:12 pitch climbs 6 over every 12. The same slope can be given as an angle in degrees or as a percentage, and the calculator converts between all three live as you type.

The figure that matters for materials is the pitch multiplier: the factor that turns a flat footprint into the real sloped surface. A 6:12 roof has a multiplier of about 1.118, so its surface is ~12% larger than the area you'd measure on the ground.

## Sloped area and material coverage

Each face's true area comes from its footprint and pitch; the material then sets how that area becomes a unit count. Asphalt shingles are sold by the bundle (about three to a square), metal by the panel (width × length), and clay or concrete tiles by the piece at a tiles-per-area rate.

## Accessories and labour

Beyond the primary material, most jobs need underlayment under the whole roof, drip edge along the eaves and rakes, and ridge cap along the top. The calculator sizes underlayment from the sloped area plus its overlap, and turns the eave, rake and ridge lengths it deduces from each face's geometry into linear metres and pieces.

Labour is quoted per roofing square in most markets, so an optional rate per square multiplies the total squares into a labour figure that adds to the material cost for a complete job estimate. Fasteners — nails or screws — can be totalled from the unit count and a per-box figure.

## Common mistakes to avoid

Quoting the footprint instead of the sloped area. A 100 m² plan on a 6:12 roof is really ~112 m² of surface — order by the sloped figure or you'll fall short.

Ignoring pitch on a steep roof. The steeper the pitch, the bigger the multiplier and the more material and waste; a 12:12 roof has 41% more surface than its footprint.

Forgetting the waste allowance. Hips, valleys and dormers force off-cuts; the complexity setting bumps the waste so a cut-up roof isn't estimated like a simple gable.

Mixing up the squares unit. A roofing square is 100 sq ft, not one square foot or one square metre — material and labour are priced per square, so check which unit a quote uses.

### What is roof pitch?

Roof pitch is the slope's steepness, written as the rise in inches over 12 inches of horizontal run — so 6:12 rises 6 for every 12. The same slope can be given as an angle in degrees or a percentage grade. The calculator converts between x:12, degrees and percent live, and shows the pitch multiplier used to turn footprint into sloped area.

### How do I calculate roof pitch?

Measure the rise over a 12-inch run, or the total rise and run, and divide: pitch in x:12 is rise ÷ run × 12, and the angle is atan(rise ÷ run). For example a roof rising 4 over 12 is 4:12, or 18.4°. Enter either notation in the calculator and it returns the others plus the area multiplier.

### What is a 6:12 pitch in degrees?

A 6:12 pitch is 26.57° — atan(6 ÷ 12) = atan(0.5). It is a 50% grade and has a pitch multiplier of about 1.118, so the sloped surface is roughly 12% larger than the roof's footprint. Common conversions: 4:12 = 18.4°, 9:12 = 36.9°, 12:12 = 45°.

### What is the roof pitch multiplier?

The pitch multiplier, or area factor, is √(1 + slope²) — the number you multiply a flat footprint by to get the true sloped area, and a horizontal run by to get the rafter length. It is 1.118 for 6:12 and 1.414 for 12:12. Skipping it is the most common way to under-order roofing.

### How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Divide the sloped area (including waste) by the coverage of one bundle and round up. A bundle covers about 33 sq ft, and three bundles make a roofing square (100 sq ft). For a 9.6-square roof with 10% waste that's about 32 bundles. Set the bundle coverage and the calculator works out the count and the squares.

### How many squares is my roof?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of sloped roof area, so squares = sloped area in sq ft ÷ 100 (or m² ÷ 9.29). Work out each face's footprint, multiply by the pitch factor for the true area, add them up and divide by 100. The calculator shows the total in squares automatically.

### How much waste should I add for roofing?

Around 10% is typical for asphalt shingles and tile and about 5% for metal, increased for cut-up roofs with hips, valleys and dormers. The calculator sets a default from the material and a complexity multiplier (simple, hip or cut-up), and you can override it with your own figure.

### Does it handle shingles, metal and tile?

Yes. Each material counts in its own unit: shingles by the bundle (coverage per bundle), metal by the panel (width × length) and clay or concrete tile by the piece (tiles per m² or per sq ft). Pick the material and the calculator uses the right coverage maths and waste default.
