Pitch, slope factor and true roof area

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-unit run — 6/12, 8/12 — or in degrees, and it drives everything downstream. The slope factor is √(rise² + 12²)/12: a 6/12 roof has a factor of 1.118, so its true surface area is 11.8% larger than its plan footprint; a 12/12 roof is 41.4% larger. Measure the building footprint including the eaves overhang, multiply by the slope factor, and you have the area that actually needs covering. Skipping the slope factor is the classic roofing error, and on a steep roof it is a 30–40% shortfall — enough to stop a job mid-course.

Squares, bundles and the accessories that add up

Roofing is sold in squares: one square is 100 ft² (about 9.29 m²) of finished roof. Standard three-tab and architectural shingles come three bundles to the square, so a 24-square roof needs 72 bundles before waste — add 10% for a simple gable and 15% for a hipped or cut-up roof, where every hip and valley means a diagonal cut. Then price the things that are not the field: starter strip and ridge cap by the linear foot, underlayment by the roll, drip edge, valley flashing, and nails at roughly 320 per square for a four-nail pattern. On many roofs these accessories are a fifth of the material cost.

Siding: gross wall area minus the openings

Siding is also sold in squares of 100 ft², usually two or three boxes to the square depending on the profile. Work out the gross wall area wall by wall, add the gable triangles as ½ × base × height, and subtract windows and doors — but only the large ones, for the same reason as with paint: the cutting waste around a small opening cancels the saving. Vinyl and fibre-cement both want 10% waste on a plain elevation and 15% on one full of openings and corners. Trim is counted separately and in linear feet: J-channel around every opening, corner posts, starter strip along the bottom, and the fascia and soffit that finish the eaves.

What goes behind the cladding

The envelope only performs if the insulation behind it does. Attic R-values in cold climates run to R-49 or R-60, walls to R-13 or R-21 depending on stud depth and zone; the target is set by your climate zone, not by preference. Batts are cheap and fast but only work if they are cut to fit — a compressed or gappy batt loses a large share of its rated value. Blown-in insulation is measured by depth against a bag-coverage chart, so the number of bags depends on the R-value you want, not on the area alone. Whatever the material, a continuous air barrier and correct ventilation matter as much as the R-number, because a well-insulated but leaky roof still loses heat and gains condensation.

Common questions

How do I convert roof pitch to roof area?

Multiply the plan footprint by the slope factor √(rise² + 12²)/12. A 6/12 pitch gives 1.118, so a 1,000 ft² footprint is 1,118 ft² of actual roof surface. Include the eaves overhang in the footprint.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Three bundles per square (100 ft²) for standard three-tab and most architectural shingles. Heavier premium shingles can run four or five bundles to the square — check the manufacturer's coverage before you order.

How much waste should I add to a roofing order?

10% for a simple gable roof, 15% for a hipped or complex roof with valleys and dormers. Every hip and valley forces a diagonal cut, and the off-cuts from those cuts are rarely reusable.

How is siding measured?

In squares of 100 ft². Take the gross wall area, add gable triangles as ½ × base × height, deduct only the large openings, and add 10–15% waste. Trim, corner posts and J-channel are counted separately in linear feet.

What R-value do I need in my attic?

It depends on your climate zone: roughly R-30 to R-38 in mild zones and R-49 to R-60 in cold ones. Insulation only delivers its rating if it is installed without gaps or compression and paired with a proper air barrier.
