The calculator above turns a room's dimensions into the one answer every flooring shopper actually needs — how many boxes of laminate, vinyl plank, engineered or solid hardwood to buy — along with the underlayment rolls and transition strips to go with them, for one room or a whole floor, in metric or imperial, all in your browser.

The guide below explains how to work out boxes from floor area and box coverage, why the install pattern changes how many spare planks you need, how underlayment and transitions are estimated, and worked examples you can reproduce by hand.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Flooring is sold by coverage — a fixed number of square feet or square metres per box or bundle — so the real shopping question is how many whole boxes cover your floor plus an allowance for cuts and waste.

In short: boxes = floor area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up. The calculator does every step as you type and always rounds up to whole boxes, because you can only buy a whole box.

As a rule of thumb, a 13 ft × 16 ft (208 ft²) room with vinyl plank at about 23.8 ft² per box needs roughly 229 ft² once a 10% straight-run allowance is added — which rounds up to 10 boxes, with a little spare left over.

How this calculator works

You describe the job; the calculator handles the arithmetic. Pick a flooring type, add a room and enter its width and length — always dimensions, never a raw area, so a unit mix-up can't silently double your order. Set the box coverage off the packaging and choose the install pattern, and it returns the floor area, the boxes to buy, the realised waste and the spare coverage per room and for the whole floor.

The pattern sets a sensible default waste allowance — more for diagonal, herringbone and chevron, less for a straight run — which you can override, plus an optional +5% nudge for a complex, many-cut room. Underlayment rolls, transition strips, an optional attic-stock box and optional prices live in the assumptions panel, so you can match exactly what you are buying. Switch between metric (m, m²) and imperial (ft, ft²) at any time and every value converts.

Pattern waste: why a straight run and herringbone differ

Every flooring job loses some material to cuts at the walls and around obstructions, plus the odd damaged plank. How much you lose depends mostly on the install pattern: a straight run wastes little, while diagonal, herringbone and chevron layouts cut more planks at the perimeter and along the seams, so they need more spares.

The calculator sets the waste allowance from the pattern you choose, using the typical ranges below, and you can override it for a tricky room. A large, complex or many-doored room pushes waste up; a simple rectangle pushes it down. These are general planning figures — always confirm against your own room and product.

Underlayment, transitions and the expansion gap

Floating floors usually need underlayment — a foam or felt roll that cushions and quietens the floor — unless your planks already have a pad attached, in which case you should not add a second layer. The calculator estimates rolls from the floor area and the roll's coverage, and drops the count to zero when you confirm an attached pad. For nail-down solid hardwood the same field relabels to a moisture barrier or rosin paper.

Transition strips bridge doorways and meet other floors. The calculator takes a count of transitions, a run width and a standard strip length and works out how many strips to buy. It stays deliberately generic — it does not try to pick T-mould versus reducer versus stair-nose for you.

The expansion gap — the small perimeter space (about 3⁄8 in / 10 mm) a floating floor needs to move — is shown on the diagram as a dashed border. It is educational only: it never changes the box count and is never a purchased quantity.

The numbers in the results come from these formulas.

Boxes to buy

  • Floor area is width × length, minus any obstructions; waste comes from the install pattern unless you override it.
  • Boxes always round up, and turning on attic stock adds one spare box for future repairs.

Underlayment rolls

rolls = ⌈ floor area ÷ roll coverage ⌉ (0 if the pad is attached)
  • Estimated from the floor area and the roll's coverage; confirm an attached pad and the count drops to zero.
  • For nail-down solid hardwood this becomes a moisture barrier / rosin paper at a larger roll coverage.

Transition strips

strips = ⌈ (transitions × run width) ÷ strip length ⌉
  • A generic estimate from a count of doorway transitions, a run width and a standard strip length (default 94 in / 2.4 m).
  • It does not distinguish T-mould, reducer or stair-nose — buy the specific profile each doorway needs.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering by area alone. Flooring comes in boxes, so 208 ft² of floor is really “how many whole boxes cover 208 ft² plus waste” — always round up to boxes, not square feet.

Using the same waste for every layout. A straight run might lose 10%; herringbone and chevron can lose 18–20%. Match the allowance to the pattern or you'll run short on the cuts.

Guessing the box coverage. It varies by product and plank size, so read the square feet or square metres per box off the packaging and enter it — it is the number that most affects your box count.

Double-buying underlayment. If your planks have an attached pad, you don't need a separate roll — confirm what your specific product says before ordering.

Buying across dye lots later. Order the whole floor — including spares — in one go so the colour and finish match, and keep a spare box for future repairs.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Multiply the floor area by one plus the waste allowance, then divide by the coverage per box and round up. For a 208 ft² room with boxes covering 23.8 ft² and a 10% straight-run allowance, that's 208 × 1.10 ÷ 23.8 ≈ 9.6, which rounds up to 10 boxes. The calculator does this as you type across all your rooms at once.

How much waste should I add for flooring?

For a straight or offset run, about 5–10% is typical. Diagonal layouts need roughly 12–15%, and herringbone or chevron 15–20% because they cut more planks at the edges and seams. Add about 5% more for L-shaped or small rooms, lots of obstructions, or big planks. The calculator sets a sensible default from the pattern and lets you override it.

How much extra flooring for a diagonal pattern?

A 45° diagonal layout typically wastes about 12–15% because the perimeter is full of angled cuts, versus 5–10% for a straight run. Choose the diagonal pattern and the calculator raises the allowance automatically; bump it up further for a small or irregular room.

How much extra flooring for herringbone or chevron?

Herringbone and chevron are the most cutting-intensive layouts, so allow about 15–20% waste — the calculator applies 18% for herringbone and 20% for chevron by default. Hand-cutting chevron from straight planks can run higher still, so increase the allowance if you're mitring on site.

How much does a box of flooring cover?

It varies by product and plank size. Laminate and vinyl plank commonly cover about 20–24 ft² per box, engineered wood a little more, and solid hardwood is sold by the bundle at roughly 18–22 ft². There's no universal number, so read the coverage off the packaging and enter it — it's the value that most affects your box count.

How much underlayment do I need?

Divide the floor area by the roll's coverage and round up — for 364 ft² with 100 ft² rolls that's 4 rolls. Foam and felt rolls are commonly sold in 100, 200 or 600 ft² sizes, so set the roll coverage to match what you're buying.

Do I need underlayment if my planks have an attached pad?

No — if your flooring already has a pad attached, adding a separate underlayment can void the warranty and feel spongy underfoot. Confirm the attached-pad toggle and the calculator sets the roll count to zero. Whether a product has a pad is printed on the box, not decided by the flooring type.

How many transition strips do I need?

Count the doorways and other floor-to-floor transitions, multiply by the run width and divide by the standard strip length (94 in / 2.4 m by default), then round up. The calculator keeps this generic — buy the specific profile each doorway needs, such as a T-mould, reducer or stair-nose.

What is the expansion gap and does it change how much I buy?

The expansion gap is the small perimeter space (about 3⁄8 in / 10 mm) a floating floor needs so it can expand and contract without buckling. It's shown on the diagram as a dashed border, but it never changes the box count — it's a fitting detail, not a purchased quantity.

Why doesn't the calculator show a plank count for solid hardwood?

Solid hardwood boards ship at random lengths rather than a fixed size, so a derived plank count would be misleading. For that type the calculator leans on the trustworthy number — bundles of coverage to buy — and suppresses the plank count. For laminate, vinyl and engineered, plank length is fixed, so it shows an approximate plank count too.

Can I calculate a whole floor of several rooms at once?

Yes. Add a room for each area you're covering and the calculator consolidates them into a single shopping list — it sums the floor areas across rooms before rounding up to boxes, so you don't over-buy from per-room rounding. Underlayment and transitions are totalled the same way.

Does it work in metric and imperial?

Yes. Enter rooms in metres or feet and coverage in square metres or square feet. Switch the unit toggle at any time and every input and result converts, so it suits both EU and US flooring jobs.

Can I export or print the result?
